Riyadh and Dammam count: a wider net than most
Most airlines write their Zamzam rule around two or three airports. Emirates ties the free 5 litres to itineraries that include Jeddah or Madinah. flydubai lists four Saudi cities, Oman Air three. Qatar Airways publishes exceptions instead of a short list: the sealed container is accepted at every QR airport in Saudi Arabia except Tabuk (TUU) and Abha (AHB). Among the Gulf carriers in our dataset, only Gulf Air covers more Saudi airports.
That one line changes real trips. Pilgrims who finish Umrah and then spend a week with relatives in Riyadh can still check the container on their QR flight home from the capital. Families in the Eastern Province fly out of Dammam with their Zamzam instead of routing back through Jeddah. The free carriage follows the QR network, so the question at booking time is short: does my departure airport sit outside Tabuk and Abha? If yes, the container can fly.
The two exceptions matter if your return starts in the far north or the Asir mountains. Departing Tabuk or Abha on QR, do not plan on checking a container at all; buy and check your Zamzam on a leg that leaves from a covered airport instead.
Free for Hajj and Umrah passengers first: where everyone else stands
QR's wording frames the free 5-litre container as a service for Hajj and Umrah passengers. That is the group the rule was written for, and in pilgrimage season the Jeddah and Madinah counters process these boxes by the thousand.
Travelling on a different visa? Passengers who arrive with the correct sealed airport container are generally accepted too. Treat that as airport practice with no printed guarantee behind it. If your trip is work or family travel and the Zamzam matters to you, ask at the QR check-in desk before you spend money on the container, and keep the purchase receipt with your boarding pass. One question at the counter beats a refused box at the belt.
When the container is accepted, the terms are the same for everyone: no fee, its own baggage tag, and no deduction from your checked allowance.
Hand it over at check-in: how QR moves the container
The routine at the counter is short. Buy the sealed 5-litre King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Zamzam Project pack: shrink-wrapped, printed seal, carrying handle. Bring it to the QR desk with your suitcases. Staff inspect the seal, attach a separate baggage tag to the box, and send it into the hold as its own piece. Qatar Airways routes everything through its Doha hub, so nearly every QR pilgrim leaving Saudi Arabia connects at Hamad International (DOH) on the way to India, Pakistan, the UK or beyond. The container behaves like this in transit:
- One ticket, bags checked through: the tagged Zamzam piece moves through Doha's transfer system with your suitcases. You walk from gate to gate; the box meets you on the belt at your final airport, on short layovers and long same-ticket connections alike.
- Transfer screening still applies: Doha re-screens cabin bags, and the liquid rule bites again there. Any Zamzam in hand luggage is taken at DOH transfer security even if a Saudi checkpoint somehow missed it. One more reason the water rides only in the hold.
- Separate tickets: booked Saudi to Doha and Doha to home as two reservations? You enter Qatar, collect everything including the Zamzam box, and start over at check-in, where the next airline's own rules apply from scratch. - Buy on the Saudi side: the sealed King Abdullah pack is sold at Saudi airport counters. Do not plan on finding one in Doha for the onward leg.
Buying the container, and what it does to your QR allowance
The official Zamzam Project counters at Jeddah (KAIA) and Madinah airports sell the airline-approved container for about SAR 12.50. Counters sit near the check-in halls and are signposted; in Hajj season, budget an extra 30 minutes for the queue. Departing Riyadh or Dammam, the requirement is the same sealed pack, so sort out where you will get it before airport day rather than hoping for a counter at the gate.
The pleasant part of the QR rule is the maths. The container flies on top of whatever checked allowance your fare carries. On most routes, including ex-India, QR economy uses a weight ladder by fare family (Lite 20 kg, Classic 25 kg, Convenience 30 kg, Comfort 35 kg), while flights to the Americas and Africa use a piece system. Whichever applies, your suitcase packing stays untouched by the water. Route promos move these numbers around, and the allowance printed on your ticket is final, so plan from the ticket.
