A room a couple of minutes on foot from the Haram and a room a shuttle-ride out can be priced worlds apart for identical nights, so when you weigh up offers, line up distance from the Haram and room category first, not the headline total. Because Mumbai flies nonstop with real competition on the route, the airfare line behaves more predictably than it does for cities forced to connect, and you land rested, which is a genuine part of the value even though it never appears as a figure.

The working rule: pull a live airfare yourself for your exact dates, price hotels by their distance from the Haram, and make any operator itemise the five parts above in writing. Best time to go for Umrah from Mumbai

Timing sets both the crowd and the cost, and the shape of the year barely changes. Ramadan is the peak. It is the richest time spiritually and the most expensive and crowded, with airfares out of Mumbai and Makkah hotel rates rising sharply in the weeks around it. If Ramadan is the goal, book far earlier than feels comfortable and plan to pay the premium.

For a quieter and usually cheaper trip, the stretch from about September to early December tends to be the calmest, falling outside school holidays and clear of the Hajj season. Match the spelling letter for letter; a near-match is not a match. • Guaranteed selection in any government quota. Hajj seats in the Committee channel are drawn at random, so no one can promise them.
• Hajj on a tourist visa. Hajj needs a dedicated Hajj visa and can never be done on a tourist visa.

• A large cash-only advance with no numbered receipt and no written agreement listing inclusions, hotel category and distance from the Haram, flights and total cost.
