Timing decides both the crowd and the cost, and the pattern holds steady year after year. Ramadan is the peak. It is the most rewarding window spiritually and, at the same time, the most expensive and the most crowded, with airfares out of Delhi and Makkah hotel rates climbing sharply in the weeks around it. If your heart is set on Ramadan, book unusually early and plan to pay for the privilege.

For a calmer and usually cheaper trip, the stretch from about September to early December tends to be the quietest, sitting outside the school holidays and clear of the Hajj season. Match the spelling exactly, because a near-match is not a match.
