What the scheme includes and who qualifies
Air India launched its current student scheme in December 2024, replacing the older route-specific offers with one set of benefits on a single booking: up to 10 percent off the base fare, 10 kg of extra checked baggage and one free date change. The scheme covers Economy, Premium Economy and Business, and it runs on both domestic and international routes, which makes it wider than the domestic-only student fares sold by India's low-cost carriers.
Eligibility runs on two tests. First, you must be a full-time student, enrolled on a course that runs at least one academic year. Second, for international travel you must be aged 12 to 30 on the day of travel. The discount has to be selected while booking direct on airindia.com or the Air India app; that selection is what attaches the student benefits to your ticket. At the airport the scheme is proven with paper: a student ID or admission letter, plus a student visa where your destination requires one.
One boundary worth stating early: the extra 10 kg is checked baggage only. Your cabin allowance stays the standard rule for every economy passenger, one cabin bag of 55 × 40 × 20 cm up to 7 kg plus a personal item. The full picture, including cabin sizes, Zamzam rules and excess fees, lives in our main Air India baggage allowance guide.
What the 10 kg lands on top of
An extra 10 kg only means something once you know the base it sits on, and Air India's base depends on route and fare.
| Route type | Standard economy checked | With the student scheme |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic, base fares | 15 kg | 25 kg |
| Domestic, Flex | 25 kg | 35 kg |
| USA/Canada and UK/Europe | Value 1 × 23 kg; Classic and Flex 2 × 23 kg | Reported: students keep 2 × 23 kg even on Value; confirm at booking |
| Gulf and many Asia routes | Roughly 20–30 kg by fare | Roughly 30–40 kg |
Domestic middle fare tiers vary by source (15 to 20 kg) and fare family names differ across sources. No single bag may exceed 32 kg on any route. The allowance printed on your ticket overrides every table, including this one.
Domestic flights
Air India's domestic base economy fares carry 15 kg of checked baggage under the policy in force since May 2024, and the top economy Flex fare carries 25 kg. The student 10 kg stacks on whichever fare you buy: 25 kg in total on a base fare, 35 kg on Flex. For a hostel move between cities, 25 kg covers one large suitcase with room to spare, and it matches what the budget carriers offer students without needing their special fare.
USA, Canada, UK and Europe
These routes count pieces rather than kilos. On USA and Canada routes (effective 5 June 2025) and UK and Europe routes (effective 17 October), Economy Value includes 1 × 23 kg while Classic and Flex include 2 × 23 kg; Business carries 2 × 32 kg. A flat 10 kg does not map neatly onto a piece system, and the student benefit here takes a different reported shape: students are said to keep 2 × 23 kg even on Value fares, which would double the cheapest fare's allowance. That report carries a confirm-at-booking tag in our data, so treat it as a question to put to Air India before you buy a Value fare on the strength of it, and check the baggage line on your booking confirmation once you have paid.
Gulf and Asia
Most Gulf and many Asia routes stay weight-based, at roughly 20 to 30 kg depending on fare. Here the arithmetic is plain: the student 10 kg lifts a typical allowance to roughly 30 to 40 kg, generous territory for a semester abroad in the Gulf or Southeast Asia.
How to claim the discount in 4 steps
- Book direct. The scheme is booked on airindia.com or the Air India app, and nowhere else in the process matters more than this first choice.
- Select the Student discount when you set up your search, then pick Economy, Premium Economy or Business on a domestic or international route. The fare shown should reflect the discount before you pay.
- Check eligibility before paying: full-time student on a course of at least one academic year, and aged 12 to 30 on the day of travel for international flights.
- Carry documents to check-in: student ID or admission letter, plus student visa where applicable. Keep them in your hand luggage, since staff can ask for proof before your bags are tagged.
How it stacks against Air India Express and Akasa
Two other Indian carriers sell student fares, both domestic-only, and both land on the same headline number for a domestic hop.
Air India Express runs a domestic Student Fare with up to 6 percent off the base fare and 25 kg of checked baggage in total; a valid school or university student ID is mandatory at check-in. Akasa Air's Student Discount takes a flat 7 percent off the base fare and also totals 25 kg (the standard 15 kg plus 10 kg extra), for students aged 12 to 24 enrolled in an Indian school or university, with a hard copy of the original student ID required at the counter.
Air India's base-fare answer on domestic routes is the same 25 kg. The gaps open elsewhere: book a Flex fare and the student total climbs to 35 kg, the discount runs up to 10 percent rather than 6 or 7, a free date change is included, and this is the only scheme of the three that covers international routes and premium cabins. A student flying Delhi to Mumbai can shop all three on price; a student flying Delhi to London has one option on this list. The side-by-side table in our student baggage comparison covers the international carriers too.
What 10 kg is worth in rupees
Skip the scheme and buy the same kilos as excess, and the price is easy to estimate. At domestic airport counters Air India charges about INR 600 per kg plus GST, so 10 kg bought at the counter runs roughly INR 6,000 plus GST, on top of a fare where you also gave up as much as 10 percent off. Prepaying excess online through Manage Booking is commonly about 20 percent cheaper than the counter, which softens the hit for non-students but does not close the gap. On US routes the stakes rise: an extra piece costs roughly USD 200 online to USD 250 at the airport, which is exactly why the reported keep-two-pieces-on-Value benefit deserves written confirmation before you book. Run your own route and weight through the excess baggage calculator to see the counter bill the scheme spares you.
FAQs: Air India student baggage
How much extra baggage do students get on Air India?
The student scheme launched in December 2024 gives 10 kg of extra checked baggage on top of the fare's allowance, plus up to 10 percent off the base fare and one free date change. It applies in Economy, Premium Economy and Business, on domestic and international routes.
How do I book the Air India student discount?
Book direct on airindia.com or the Air India app and select the Student discount while booking. The scheme covers full-time students enrolled on a course of at least one academic year; for international travel the age band is 12 to 30 on the day of travel. Confirm the current terms at booking.
What is the total checked allowance for students on Air India domestic flights?
Domestic base economy fares include 15 kg, so the extra 10 kg takes a student to 25 kg in total. The top economy Flex fare carries 25 kg, which becomes 35 kg with the scheme. The allowance printed on your ticket is final.
Do students get extra baggage on Air India flights to the USA or UK?
USA/Canada and UK/Europe routes use the piece concept: Economy Value includes 1 x 23 kg, while Classic and Flex include 2 x 23 kg. Students are reported to keep 2 x 23 kg even on Value fares, but that report carries a confirm-at-booking tag, so check the baggage line on your booking before you pay.
What documents do students need at Air India check-in?
Carry your student ID or admission letter, plus a student visa where applicable. Staff can ask for proof at check-in, and without valid documents the benefit can be denied, leaving standard fare rules to apply. Keep the documents in your hand luggage rather than inside a checked bag.
Packing for a year away?
The student 10 kg helps, but a year abroad can still tip the scale. Price every extra kilo before the counter does.
